Who are the Governors?

Governors are drawn from the local community. There are five categories

  1. 1.       Parent governors are elected from parents who have children in school.
  2. 2.       Co-opted governors are invited to stand on the governing body, generally these are people who have skills that support the work of the governing body, they are professionals who have a business or public service management background.
  3. 3.       Local authority governors are appointed by the local authority.
  4. 4.       Staff governors are elected by the school staff.
  5. 5.       Head teacher.

All governors are committed to the school and its aspirations for every pupil to achieve their full potential; to succeed, soar and excel.

What do governors do?

The governing body is responsible for the strategic management of the school. The governing body decides what they want the school to achieve, they do this by agreeing a framework with targets, and agreeing policies, in consultation with the head teacher. The governing body then monitors and evaluates the implementation and effectiveness of the framework and policies.

One of the most important aspects of the work of the governing body is to support the staff, parents and pupils, this is done by regular visits to the school.

In this school the governing body is organised into three committees

  1. 1.       The Full Governing Body: all governors attend this meeting, the general business of the school is discussed and reports are received from the head teacher and others.
  2. 2.       The Finance and Resources about half the governors sit on this committee. Responsibilities include setting the school budget and monitoring expenditure, management of human resources, management of the school building and support services. Setting and reviewing policies and procedures.
  3. 3.       Strategy and Curriculum about half the governors sit on this committee. Responsibilities include agreeing the school development plan, monitoring and evaluating its implementation and effectiveness. Setting and reviewing policies and procedures.

The Governing Body is here to support you and your child through your child’s school career, if you have any questions about the work of the governing body or are interested in becoming a governor please contact us through the school office or speak to a parent governor.
